Berwick edges Franklin, 52-51

The Berwick Panthers edged Franklin High, 52-51, in boys high school basketball District 8-3A action Friday in Berwick.
Berwick got the game-winning point when Larenz Clark hit one of two free throws with less than a minute remaining in the ball game.
Late turnovers after the free throw doomed the Hornets’ attempt to tie or take the lead.
No individual stats were available for Berwick.
The Panthers (15-11 overall, 4-3 in district) will return to action today when they travel to face Erath in District 8-3A action.
Morgan City knocks
off Assumption
A big third quarter helped propel the Morgan City Tigers to a 57-47 victory against Assumption in District 7-1A action on the road Friday.
While Morgan City trailed 24-21 coming out of halftime, the Tigers outscored the Mustangs 21-8 in the third period for a 42-32 lead after three quarters.
Morgan City and Assumption each scored 15 points in the final period.
The game was tied at nine after a quarter before Assumption outscored Morgan City 15-12 in the second period for a 24-21 halftime advantage.
Morgan City connected on five three-pointers, while Assumption made six.
Makye Richard led Morgan City with 20 points, while Ke’sean Francois added 12, and Taaj Daniels, 11.
Other Morgan City scorers included Ronnell Williams, seven; Tywan Walker, five; and Jared Singleton, two.
Morgan City (13-12, 2-3) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts South Lafourche in District 7-4A action. Junior varsity boys action will start at 5:30 p.m. with boys’ varsity set for an approximately 7:30 p.m. start following the girls’ varsity contest.
LCA pulls away
from CCHS
Central Catholic hung tough with Class 1A’s top-ranked team and District 7-1A foe Lafayette Christian for three quarters before the Knights pulled away for an 83-55 victory in Morgan City.
While Lafayette Christian took a 22-10 lead after a quarter, Central Catholic outscored the visitors 19-11 in the second period and went into the half down just 33-29.
Lafayette Christian took a 55-44 lead after three quarters before pulling away in the final period.
Galen Alexander, ranked No. 58 in the 2017 ESPN 60 class, was one of four Lafayette Christian players in double figures with 19 points.
Lafayette Christian connected on eight three-pointers, while Central Catholic nailed five.
Jalen Johnson led Central Catholic with 22 points, while Elijah Swan also reached double figures with 14.
Other scorers included Brooks Thomas, nine; Tanner Wiggins, six; and Blake Byrne, four.
Central Catholic (6-12, 4-4) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Centerville in District 7-1A action. Boys varsity action is set for a 6 p.m. start.
