3 suspected in gun battle

What police said was a gun battle near a Morgan City elementary school has resulted in the arrests of two men and a warrant for a third man.
Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch said the Oct. 21 shooting at Orange Street and Federal Avenue near Maitland Elementary School was an ongoing dispute believed to be about retaliation with victims also turning out to be suspects.
There isn’t an official motive right now, he said.
Morgan City Police spokesman Lt. James Blair said, “We can speculate about it, but we really don’t know.”
St. Mary Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Donald R. Brown, 30, of the 400 block of Fifth Street in Morgan City at 11:29 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant from Morgan City police for attempted second degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and violation of a firearm-free zone.
Assisting Franklin police, St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division detectives and a deputy with the sheriff’s Warrants Division located Brown at a residence on Chatsworth Road in Franklin, Sheriff Mark Hebert said.
Brown remained jailed Wednesday morning with no bail set.
Brown and Eric Charles of Egle Street in Morgan City originally were identified as the victims of the shooting, which occurred about 10 a.m. Oct. 21.
Brown sustained a non-life threatening wound to his side and was taken to Teche Regional Medical Center, Crouch said. Charles suffered a wound to his leg, Crouch said.
Maitland Elementary, Holy Cross Elementary and Central Catholic were put on lockdown after the shooting, but the lockdowns were lifted within a few hours.
Charles, 23, was arrested at 12:15 p.m. Dec. 5 on a litany of drug charges in addition to the attempted second degree warrant after sheriff’s narcotics detectives conducted an investigation at a hotel in Morgan City. Detectives observed Charles walk out of a hotel room where they saw Charles sell a bag of marijuana, Hebert said.
He was charged on attempted second degree murder, possession of Schedule II cocaine and possession of Schedule I marijuana second offense, distribution of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of a controlled dangerous substance law (drug-free zone) transactions involving drug proceeds, a probation violation — felony hold and parole violation hold.
Meanwhile, Barron Kenner is still wanted for his suspected participation in the gun battle.
He was featured in the October and November editions of The Daily Review’s Most Wanted list.
Kenner, 40, of Morgan City, is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds. He is wanted for attempted second degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of firearm in a firearm-free zone.
