Morgan City doctor leads state group

Dr. Melvin Bourgeois of Morgan City was sworn in as president of the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians at the group’s inaugural luncheon in Destin, Fla., on July 5.
Bourgeois became the LAFP’s 67th President.
A practicing family physician for more than 50 years, Bourgeois earned his bachelor of science at Loyola University in 1957 and graduated from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1961. After completing his family medicine residency at Lafayette Charity Hospital, he served in the Eighth Naval District as clinical medical director of the District for two years in New Orleans before moving to Morgan City.
Bourgeois has been a member of the LAFP and American Academy of Family Physicians since 1965. A former president of the Louisiana State Board Medical Examiners, Bourgeois has also maintained memberships to the American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, the St. Mary Parish Medical Society and the Louisiana State Medical Society.
In 1993, Bourgeois and his son, Dr. Robert Bourgeois, started the Bourgeois Medical Clinic where he continues to practice as a family physician.
Bourgeois and his wife, Geri, live in Morgan City. Together they have six children.
