Patterson scout attends summer camp in Hawaii

Liam McCloy, a Boy Scout in Troop 41, of Patterson, earned enough money through fundraisers to attend summer camp at Pupukea in Hawaii.
McCloy, a sophomore at Central Catholic High School, traveled with his father and assistant scout leader Kerry McCloy to the camp located on Oahu.
While at camp, Liam McCloy, who was the solo scout from his troop, earned the spirit stick for displaying scouting spirit when he participated in daily chants and activities. He also won first place in the cobbler cook off with a peach cobbler and earned honor troop.
McCloy also earned the Hawaiiana Award, a Boy Scouts-recognized award that can only be earned at this particular camp. To do so, he learned old Hawaiian games, how to make a tea leaf hula skirt as well as how to dance the hula and learned several words and phrases in the native language. His father also earned the Hawaiiana award and took first place in the scout master splash competition.
While in Hawaii, the pair visited Pearl Harbor and toured the USS Arizona, USS Bowfin, USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum.
They visited the Dole Pineapple Plantation and went through the world’s longest garden maze (3.11 miles).
They visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, Sunset Beach, Sharks Cove, Turtle Beach, China Mans Hat and Waimea Bay and Waimea Falls and Gardens while they were there.
They even visited McDonalds and ate a local deluxe breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, white rice, Portuguese sausage and Spam, an island favorite.
