Sheriff: No injuries, damages reported after gunfire heard in Amelia

No injuries or damages have been reported after St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office detectives heard gunshots while investigating a separate shooting Tuesday morning in Amelia, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office news release.
In the midst of investigating a shooting Tuesday morning in Amelia during which a 35-year-old man was wounded, detectives heard gunfire in the Friendship Alley area, the release said. The sheriff’s office also received reports of gunfire from residents. Responding deputies found no property damage and have received no reports of damage or injury, the release said.
Sheriff Mark Hebert has assigned additional patrol deputies to Amelia and the surrounding area, the release said. Residents should continue to report suspicious activity immediately to the Sheriff's Office at 985 -384-1622.
At 1:07 a.m. Tuesday, a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office dispatcher received multiple calls through 911 from several subjects stating that they heard gunfire near Bailey’s Lane and West Side Park Lane in Amelia. Deputies responded to the area and located a 35-year-old male victim with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his back on Lake Palourde Road near Bailey’s Lane, the release said.
Deputies also located an SUV off of the roadway. The victim was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Teche Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.
Detectives investigating the shooting learned that the victim was driving the SUV from Bailey’s Lane onto Lake Palourde Road when gunshots struck the vehicle grazing the victim, the release said.
