A pedestrian walking in the westbound lane of U.S. 90 was killed Thursday morning in Berwick.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard said the accident occurred at 2:20 a.m. as Zakk Hotard, 19, of Lockport, was driving his 2003 GMC Yukon pulling a boat trailer. He was headed to the Berwick boat launch to go duck hunting with a 20-year-old passenger, Richard said.
When Hotard turned from the left lane of U.S. 90 toward Berwick South Road, he struck David Daley, 35, of Bossier City, who was in the lane of travel, the chief said. Daley was possibly staying in the Patterson area and has family in Berwick, Richard added.
The chief said Daley was wearing a gray hoodie, black jacket and blue jeans. It was unknown why he was walking on the highway.
As per state law, an intoxilyzer test was run on Hotard, but he was found not to be impaired. The accident was ruled unavoidable and no charges have been filed, Richard said.
The St. Mary Parish coroner pronounced Daley deceased on the scene. An autopsy is scheduled, Richard said.
The accident remains under investigation.
