TOMAS BIRRIEL-CARMONA
Dr. Tomas Birriel-Carmona, MD, Col, US Army/Retired, age 86, died Nov. 4, 2015, at Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City, Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia I. Birriel; his daughter, Dr. Ivette Birriel-Salcedo; his grandson, Javier Birriel-Cruz; his parents, Tomas Birriel-Jimenez and Margot Carmona de Birriel; and his sister, Socorro Birriel de Moreira.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Margarita Birriel-Salcedo, Dr. Tomas Birriel-Salcedo and his wife Dr. Jane Birriel, Dr. Javier Birriel-Salcedo, and Johanna Birriel-Salcedo; his grandchildren, Rafael Egea-Birriel, Tomas and his wife Michelle Birriel, Rafael and his wife Jennifer Birriel, Noel Birriel, Dr. T. Javier Birriel and his wife Dr. Lillybeth A. Birriel, and Lola Birriel; his great-grandchildren, Leyla, Cecilia, and Julian Birriel; his siblings, Rafael L. Birriel-Carmona, Pilar Birriel-Carmona, Margarita Birriel-Carmona, and Carmen D. Birriel-Carmona; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
After attending Medical School in Madrid, Spain, he was a physician in Puerto Rico for a number of years before joining the U.S. Army. Dr. Birriel-Carmona earned multiple awards and commendations during his career in the U.S. Army, including the Combat Medical Badge, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Bronze Star. He was the FORSCOM Surgeon, the MEDDAC Commander in the Canal Zone and a combat veteran of the Vietnam War where he gallantly served as the Regimental Surgeon in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, better known as the Legendary Blackhorse Regiment.
Private services will be held at the National Cemetery at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The family requests that Remembrance Donations be given to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
