JOANN PELTIER SMITH

JoAnn Peltier Smith, a 62 year resident of Franklin, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side at the age of 79 on Monday, March 21, 2016.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, JoAnn was born in St. Mary Parish on December 5, 1936 to the late Octave Joseph Peltier and the late Mae Hebert Peltier, the eldest of four children. She simply adored and cherished her family, even following her grandchildren and great grandchildren to all of their sporting events until her health would no longer allow. Some of her favorite pastimes were playing Pokeno, having belonged to the same Pokeno Club for over 50 years, and also spending time with her line dancing friends, many of whom also belonged to the same Pokeno Club. JoAnn was also very good with numbers, keeping books for their former family business, and then going on to work for the Cypress Bayou Casino in the accounting office, of which she retired from in 2012 following 25 years of dedicated service. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Merrill J. Smith Sr.; five children, Donna S. Robison and her husband, Robby; Dennis M. Smith, Michelle S. Pontiff and her husband, Marty; Gary Smith, and Merrill “John” Smith Jr. and his wife, Renee; nine grandchildren, Kimberly R. Broussard and her husband, Eric; Rochelle Smith, Ryan Smith and his wife, Calli; Megan S. Grinnell, Tyler Pontiff, Timothy Pontiff, Kristin S. Myers and her husband, Don; Brian Smith, and Shannon Heinzen; nine great grandchildren; her sister, Carolyn Peltier Coullard and her husband, Gary; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, JoAnn was preceded in death by her son, Douglas Paul Smith; and two brothers, Keith Peltier and Ivy Peltier.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Baldwin during a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial, celebrated by Father Cedric Sonnier. A gathering of family and friends will begin at the church at 8 a.m. In keeping with Mrs. JoAnn’s wishes, she will be cremated following funeral services. Inurnment will be held with the family at a later date in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Smith, Tyler Pontiff, Brock Broussard, Robby Robison, Marty Pontiff and Eric Broussard. Honorary pallbearers will be Timothy Pontiff, Dominic Smith, Noah Smith and Bryson Broussard.
