Landry throws perfect game, Hebert, one-hitter in wins

Central Catholic’s Megan Landry, a Nicholls State commitment, was perfect on the mound Tuesday in the Lady Eagles’ 10-0 victory in five innings against Vermilion Catholic in Central Catholic’s District 7-1A opener in Bayou Vista.
Meanwhile, Morgan City’s Tyler Hebert nearly joined her in perfection, tossing a one-hitter and issuing just one walk to South Terrebonne in a 4-0 victory in the Lady Tigers’ District 7-4A opener in Morgan City.
In the Lady Eagles’ victory, Landry fanned 11 of the 15 batters she faced in the five-inning contest.
“It’s not often that a kid can say they pitched a perfect game,” Central Catholic coach Joe Russo said. “Megan has been outstanding in the circle for us this year, and I was glad to see her get a perfect game (Tuesday). I was also proud of Brooke Lipari and Bridgette Swan for making outstanding plays to keep the perfect game alive. I’m equally proud of my team for understanding their individual roles and contributing to our success.”
While Central Catholic took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, they remained scoreless until they plated a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Central Catholic put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game via the 10-run mercy rule.
Offensively, Central Catholic pounded out 13 hits and stole nine bases.
Landry finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Brittany Longman was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and two runs.
Other top offensive contributors included Hallie Autin, 2-for-3, an RBI, a stolen base and a run; Halley Romero, 2-for-3, a stolen base and a run; and Brooke Lipari, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run.
Central Catholic (10-1 overall, 1-0 in district) will return to action Thursday at 5 p.m. when they host Hanson in a 5 p.m. contest. The matchup is a battle of teams who made the Class 1A state tournament a year ago as well as top 10 teams in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings. Central Catholic is No. 1, while Hanson is No. 7.
Morgan City wins
district opener
Led by Hebert’s pitching performance and two home runs, the Lady Tigers defeated South Terrebonne in district action Tuesday.
Hebert had a solid day on the mound with nine strikeouts and faced just one batter over the minimum in the complete game.
Offensively, Morgan City only had three hits but made the most of them as two of them were home runs.
Celestina Williams finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run, while Kennedy Hebert finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
Morgan City scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. While the second-inning run scored via a South Terrebonne error, Williams, a Southern University signee, had a solo home run in the third, while Kennedy Hebert homered in the fourth inning.
Morgan City (5-4 overall, 1-0) will return to action Thursday when it travels to face Vandebilt Catholic in a 4 p.m. contest. Vandebilt Catholic was the Class 4A state runner-up a year ago.
Berwick defeats
Franklin
The Berwick Lady Panthers opened District 9-3A action Tuesday with a 15-0 mercy-rule victory in three innings at Franklin.
Berwick plated all 15 of its runs in the first inning and limited Franklin to a hit.
Jordan Lipari led Berwick with three hits, including a double, while Shelby Bergeron had two hits and Mary-Jordan Melancon, a double.
Rennen DeLatte earned the win on the mound. In one inning, she surrendered one hit and fanned three.
In two innings of relief, Lipari fanned four.
Berwick (6-10, 1-0) will return to action today when it hosts Ellender in a 4 p.m. contest.
Patterson falls
to Ellender
Patterson High School fell at Ellender 15-0 Tuesday.
No individual stats were available.
The Lumberjills (5-8) will return to action Thursday when they open District 9-3A play with a 4 p.m. contest against Donaldsonville.
