St. Mary Parish is expected to receive $5.3 million if a ruling Thursday by U.S. District Court Judge Carl Barbier that BP was “grossly negligent” in its actions leading to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill stands. The ruling means BP faces penalities up to $4,300 per barrel of oil spilled. The chart is an estimate of the range of funding each of the parishes will receive, based on BP being fined $4,300 per barrel spilled from BP’s estimate of 2.45 billion barrels to the U.S. Department of Justice estimate of 4.1 billion barrels.
