Morgan City’s Ross Albritton was called on to pinch hit in the top of the seventh and the Tiger came through with an RBI-triple to right field that proved to be the winning run in a 3-2 Morgan City victory.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Morgan City pitcher Rhett Fryou singled to centerfield.
Albritton then stepped to the plate and slapped a triple to right field near the foul line that got past a diving attempt at a catch by Berwick right fielder Braden Billiot.
Malik Phillips, who had replaced Fryou on the base paths, scored, and Albritton stopped at third base to break a tie that had been in effect since the top of the fourth inning.
While Berwick got out of the remainder of the inning unscathed, Fryou retired the Panthers in order in the bottom of the seventh for the 3-2 victory.
“Berwick’s a great team,” Morgan City coach Tim Vidos said. “We knew it was going to be tough. We’ve been playing these one-run ball games all season pretty much. Coming off of a big one-run victory over Assumption earlier in the week and then this right here, I think that prepared us to play Berwick because like I said, they’re a real good baseball team.”
Fryou earned the win. In seven innings, he surrendered two runs on four hits with one walk, one hit batter and two strikeouts.
He and the Morgan City defense thwarted Berwick scoring threats in multiple innings as the Panthers left runners on second base in the first, second and sixth innings, while Morgan City also got a runner out at home plate.
While on Tuesday against John Curtis, Berwick played well in other aspects except pitching. Berwick coach Mike Thomas said his team did well in other facets but “could not hit our way out of a bag” in Thursday’s loss.
“I know that we’re a better hitting team than what we did today,” Thomas said. “We just couldn’t get any momentum on offense.”
Neal Theriot Jr. suffered the loss for Berwick. In 6.2 innings, he surrendered three runs — two earned — on seven hits with one hit batter.
Both teams plated a run in the first inning.
Morgan City scored when Phillip Hutchinson, who had reached on an error by Berwick third baseman Brandon Fryou, scored two batters later on a ball that got by Berwick catcher Cameron Wiley.
In the bottom of the first, Berwick countered when Justin Morvant, who had reached on an error by Morgan City third baseman Josh Lorenzo, later came home on a single to centerfield by Bradley Gray.
Berwick broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third.
With one out, Theriot singled to left field and advanced to second base on an error by Morgan City’s Abram Hartley.
After Fryou recorded the next out, Gray again plated a run via a single to left field for a 2-1 Berwick lead.
Gray led Berwick with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs.
Morgan City countered in the top of the fourth inning.
Matt Lorenzo led off the inning with a double, advanced to third base on a single by Morrquise Charles and scored on a fielder’s choice by Rhett Fryou.
In addition to Albritton, who finished 1-for-1 with a triple and an RBI, Rhett Fryou finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Matt Lorenzo was 1-for-2 with a double and a run to lead Morgan City’s hitters.
Morgan City (8-10) will return to action Wednesday when it travels to face Hanson in a 6 p.m. contest.
Berwick (15-8) will hit the diamond again Monday when it hosts Donaldsonville in a District 9-3A doubleheader set for a 10 a.m. start.
